St. Johnsbury Academy
St. Johnsbury Academy is a coeducational boarding and day school enrolling students in grades 9–12 and a postgraduate year in northeastern Vermont. The Academy was founded in 1842. The Academy’s campus is situated on 150 acres in a small New England town. There are six academic buildings including a fine arts center and technical education building, a large, modern library, an auditorium, nine dormitories, a gym and field house complex and a recently opened restaurant run by our own culinary students.
St. Johnsbury Academy’s program is designed to provide maximum flexibility so that a student may elect a course of study that meets his or her needs. The comprehensive curriculum includes over 220 courses, including twenty Advanced Placement sections. Other courses are offered at basic, standard, and accelerated levels. Eleven in-depth technical offerings and nearly forty arts courses round out the curriculum. In addition to four foreign languages, the Academy also offers an extensive English as a Second Language Program.
Academic and Sports Facilities
Carl Ranger Hall houses thirteen classrooms and the department’s writing lab, containing twenty-five PCs. Streeter Hall is the home to the science and technology departments. Newell Hall provides the foreign language department with extensive facilities for instruction, including two Tandberg computerized language learning systems. The Charles Hosmer Morse Center for the Arts provides extraordinary facilities, consisting of six fine-arts studios and an art gallery, a print and photography studio, two music performance studios with five practice rooms, a dance studio, and a 200-seat black box theater. The Mayo Center provides space for the Grace Stuart Orcutt library (20,000 volumes).
Alumni Memorial Gymnasium contains the basketball court, seating for 1,250. The Academy’s field house contains three multipurpose tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts; a 1∕12-mile indoor track; and a 25-yard, 6-lane indoor swimming pool. The building also provides a weight room with a Universal Gym, nine Nautilus stations, and extensive free-weight and aerobics equipment. A 400-meter all-weather track was completed in 1996.
