private schools in the USA

Cheshire Academy

Founded in 1794, Cheshire Academy is the oldest continually operated private school in Connecticut and the tenth oldest boarding school in the United States. Our academic program prepares students to succeed at the university level and we take pride in our dedication to the individual needs of each student. During the school year Cheshire Academy is home to students from 25 countries and 11 states. We have been accepting international students since 1875 and we celebrate our diversity.

Believing in the value of each human being and the richness of a diverse community, Cheshire Academy exists to provide a quality educational experience in a caring environment where individuals take responsibility for their personal growth so that they reach their full potential and make a difference in the world.

Cheshire Academy is guided by the principles our community called “The Eight Pillars of Bowden.” These eight core values— respect, responsibility, caring, civility, citizenship, morality, fairness, and trustworthiness— guide all of us in our daily interactions with each other and with the larger local, regional, national, and international communities beyond the campus. These important values serve as the set of shared ideals that each individual works hard to exemplify.

At Cheshire Academy, we provide the opportunity for all students to contribute to our Afternoon Program in a manner appropriate to their interests and ability level. From the elite athlete looking to compete on the collegiate level to the inexperienced first time participant, we provide a positive experience to all our students. Student Activities are geared to the student community. Activities offered include the obvious mall and movie runs as well as open gym and swim in our pool. We also provide opportunities to go to sports games, skiing, plays, theaters and local restaurants. Other activities include bowling, sledding, ice skating (on our own back pond while supervised by an adult chaperone), paintball, hay rides, pumpkin carving as well as holiday caroling. Friday evening offers a venue to bring speakers to the campus to educate students on specific topics while not disrupting the academic day. The different campus clubs such as SALSA (Students Advocating Life without Substance Abuse), National Honor Society, International Club as well as advisor/advisee groups sponsor a Coffee House and theme dances for Halloween, Valentine's Day, etc.
